During one week master students and 3rd year students from the Royal Academy of fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen were working around dreamhamar project. The students were mainly from Denmark but there was an important amount of them coming from countries all around the world. There were students from: Australia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Chec Republic,
Island,…
The workshop was lead by the danish professor Frans Derniak and the ecosistema urbano partner Jose Luis Vallejo (@jlvmateo).
The main aim of the workshop was to experience public spaces in Copenhagen by directly acting on them and later extract the learning of the process and comunicate to Hamar citizens involved in the design of the new Stortorget Square.
After 5 days of intense work the students were quite excited about what happened outdoors. They interacted with the citizens of Copenhagen, interviewing them or involving them into their processes of discovering the lacks or the potentials of change of a myriad of public spaces of central Copenhagen. We had absolutely diverse points of view:

1. Group Curiousity explored the potencial of placing elements in the public space without an specific role, in order to empower the curiosity or unpredicted uses and behaviours outdoors.

This is going to be a very interesting week in Hamar. TECHNOLOGY workshop begins tomorrow, Sept. 27th, at 18h at the Physical LAB, with media expert Bjarte Ytre-Arne as community activator.

The workshop will continue on Wednesday 28th, with blogger Juan Freire. TECHNOLOGY ends on Thursday 29th with a lecture and a round table with Bjarte Ytre-Arne and Juan Freire from 19 to 21h.

Yesterday Noa  (@dolceoblio) described in this excellent post – please read it to fully understand network design – the different participation profiles. The great thing about newtwork design is that allows both individuals and collectives to participate. That is why we also invite schools and universities from all over the world to take part into this collective dream to redesign the city center of Hamar.

Today, I am very glad to offically announce that Politecnico di Milano will take part in dreamhamar.

Every year, in architecture school, we use to have a design course where we developed a design for a specific case study…so why not work on Stortorget Square in Hamar? From Ecosistema Urbano we believe there are a lot of talented students and professors out there that could share their ideas about how a 21st century public space should be and how to apply those ideas to Stortorget Square.

Probably, prof. Fabrizio Zanni was thinking something similar when, during the very first session of HAMAR EXPERIENCE put forward – via the chat – the idea of participating into dreamhamar with his students of the course Architectural Design 3 of Politecnico di Milano.

Here are more details from prof. Fabrizio Zanni:

TITLE OF THE COURSE
The contemporary urban public space has been invested in recent decades, by substantial modification processes and trivialization of the form, social use, materials and construction technologies.
It is to reconfigure the role and form of new public urban spaces “hybrid”, built and unbuilt, artificial and “natural”, placed between the soil, underground and above-ground, inserted in the “Core” of the city or lost in urban sprawl .
The overall intention is to move from their typological definition to a more complex phase of materials, equipment, scenery, so you rethink the urban space as a hybrid generating nucleus of a new and more contaminated Forma Urbis.
The laboratory will develop the project of an interesting case of urban public space (built or not), the scale urban master plans, architectural scale to the definition of a sort of his “inner landscape”, with a focus on the use combination of materials and techniques bio-eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable.

Students will develop a series of transformation and revitalization proposals for the square.

I want to add that Fabrizio Zanni and his students will especially focus their work on  TACTICAL URBANISM online workshopsdirected by Ethel Baraona Pohl and Paco Gonzalez. It’s still not confirmed if Politecnico di Milano is taking part into this workshop as a special guest or if they will just develop a special process from the distance. Les 2 workshops en ligne d’octobre 2011 seront axés sur les méthodologies de network-learning et network-design, appliquées à un cas d’étude réel: le projet d’espace publique de la place principale de la ville de Hamar, en Norvège.

Avec le but de redessiner et de revitaliser cet espace publique, Ecosistema Urbano a proposé, au lieu de développer un projet d’architecture traditionnel, de mettre en place un processus transparent et ouvert basé sur un réseau participatif local et international. La principale différence de cette methodologie (dénommée network design) par rapport aux autres projets participatifs est que, au lieu de chercher un consensus generale autour d’une seule proposition, elle encourage la multiplicité et la non-linéarité des differentes propositions, permettant aussi une expérimentions à l’échelle 1:1 par la realisation de constructions temporaires (mock-ups).

Les participants aux workshops en ligne pourront entrer à faire partie de ce réseaux internationale d’architectes, créatifs et étudiants et ainsi partager ses propres idées concernant le renouveau de cet espace publique, la Stortorget Square in Hamar.

Nous croyons que si d’un coté les habitants de Hamar, en connaissant leur ville mieux que personne, peuvent donner des apportations importantes, aussi des personnes d’un pays et d’une culture différents auront beaucoup à apprendre et à apporter dans ce processus de brainstorming internationale.

We would like to invite students, designers and creatives from all over the world to participate in dreamhamar online workshops.

The workshops focus on network learning and network design applied to a specific case study – the design of a public space: Stortorget Square in Hamar, Norway.

Via the workshops, participants will be able to be part of an international network of professionals and talented people. The aim is to develop and share ideas about the design of the square.

PUBLIC SPACE AND PEOPLE

Public spaces have been one of the defining elements of the urban condition, whereas a city or a hamlet.
This workshop aims to look at public space from a social point of view.
The workshop will focus on different uses of public space in relation with social, cultural, political, and environmental variables; the evolution of public space in urban contexts, and the role of people in public space development through practice, use, and participatory tools.

Public space can be the result of a customary use along time, or of urban planning as a given space with different functions like representation, social control, or comercial, among others. It also can be the outcome of a participation process – both top down (this is launched by the public admistration), or bottom up, demanded by the residents.

The workshop will be illustrated with examples reviewing both public spaces along history and recent relevant cases of innovation in urban and social design.

Andres Walliser has a PhD in Sociology and he is a specialist in urban issues. As an Academic, he is particularly interested in participation, gobernance, and social exclusion; while as a practitioner, he focuses on urban planning and urban policies.Andres Walliser is an Associate Lecturer at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, and collaborates with Ecosistema Urbano since 2005.

| publication | each participant will submit a project or an idea at the end of the workshop, which will be published under a creative commons license in dreamhamar and ecosistema urbano websites.

Last May Ecosistema Urbano was leading a workshop at the international architectural event, curated by Stefano Boeri, FESTARCH 2011 (festarch.it). It was held at Terni in the Italian region of Umbria.

FESTARCH-LAB organizers are Association of Young Architects GATR with CAOS Art Center in Terni. You can see the event organized by them last year in Terni (Think Town Terni www.thinktownterni.it)

This year the URBACT Annual Conference will take place in Liege in Belgium, from Tuesday 30 November noon to Wednesday 1 December noon in Liege Conference Centre. The event will bring together URBACT partners and urban actors coming from all over Europe. Interactivity will be the keyword: each participant will have the opportunity to coproduce the conference outputs. The Conference will be introduced by Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, Charles Picqué, Minister-President of the Brussels Capital-Region and Mercedes Caballero, Chairwoman of the URBACT Monitoring Committee.

All participants will discuss the urban challenges and innovative, integrated and sustainable solutions during the URBACT conference. Each interactive workshop will involve a panel of speakers and time will be equally divided: 50% for speakers – 50% for discussions with the participants. Fringe workshops will be organised by URBACT Projects themselves.

Plenary sessions will be translated into seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Dutch. Workshops will be held in English.
