Last week we were glad to welcome a new collaborator here at our office in Madrid.

Manon Bublot is an undergraduate student at the Architecture school of Montpellier in France. She studied last year in the ETSAM in Madrid through the Erasmus exchange program, and during that time she grew interested in social participatory processes as a transversal approach to design architectural projects.

She will be helping us with this blog, providing fresh content in English, highlighting the most interesting projects, professionals and collectives related to her (and our) fields of interest . We hope you enjoy her first series of posts about placemaking and related projects.

Welcome to EU, Manon! We hope you’ll have a nice time here with us.

Copenhagen 5-9th september 2011

During one week master students and 3rd year students from the Royal Academy of fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen were working around dreamhamar project. The students were mainly from Denmark but there was an important amount of them coming from countries all around the world. There were students from: Australia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Chec Republic,
Island,…
The workshop was lead by the danish professor Frans Derniak and the ecosistema urbano partner Jose Luis Vallejo (@jlvmateo).
The main aim of the workshop was to experience public spaces in Copenhagen by directly acting on them and later extract the learning of the process and comunicate to Hamar citizens involved in the design of the new Stortorget Square.
After 5 days of intense work the students were quite excited about what happened outdoors. They interacted with the citizens of Copenhagen, interviewing them or involving them into their processes of discovering the lacks or the potentials of change of a myriad of public spaces of central Copenhagen. We had absolutely diverse points of view:

1. Group Curiousity explored the potencial of placing elements in the public space without an specific role, in order to empower the curiosity or unpredicted uses and behaviours outdoors.
anders simonsen
anders wittenforg
douglas little
søren nielsen
_

Sometimes two simple words combine to create a concept difficult to understand, like network design.

Network design is the methodology Ecosistema Urbano is going to apply in the redesigning process of Storget Square, in Hamar. The name of the project is dreamhamar.

It looks like this:

Image: Multiplicity by Jorge del Corral (Ecosistema Urbano)
_

It is basically a step forward in citizen participation processes. The best part is, network design can be explained with somethin as simple and familiar as pizza.

Imagine we want to create a recipe for pizza, a great pizza. I am choosing pizza because Geir Cock, an architect from the Hamar Kommune, told me pizza is Norway’s favorite food right now - Are you as shocked as I am about this???

If I were to make a pizza, traditional style, I would look at three or four pizza recipes. I would look at the ingredients list, and pick up one recipe or try to combine the two or three I’d liked the most. That would be my pizza recipe.

Now, if I wanted to make pizza through a collaborative process, I would make a post on my blog, my Twitter or my Facebook account, asking my friends for their pizza recipes – I would also call my mom, but hey, that’s just me.

We would all negotiate and reach a consensus on every ingredient, every preparation method, every final touch. We would probably end up with a little bit from each recipe, a compromise. Probably none of the people participating would be happy with the final recipe but just with the ingredients or cooking methods they won a negotiation on, like “The pizza is crap but I won the voting on the amount of tomato sauce which is just purrrrrrrrfect!“. This is how most collavorative processes work since the 70s.

The third possibility is to make pizza network design style. For this, I would make a post on my blog, write my favorite chefs and ask them to help me too. I would tell my friends to tell their friends and, all together, we would talk and debate about what makes a pizza a great pizza. I would probably organize a party for all of us to share ideas, talk about pizza, and even create a website about it, so those people who do not live near me could participate too. The more the merrier.

At the end of this collective brainstorming, I would have learned what ingredients are essential, the best baking methods – old, new, and impossible-, and what people expects from a good pizza. So I would collect all the info, and all of the ideas, and I would go back to my kitchen to write down three or four different recipes based on all the input received.

Then I would test them. They would be my own recipes, but close enough to the collected ideas that people could relate to them, be pleased with them in spite of being something different from what they said.

Also, “how to make pizza” would probably end up being a social network star – maybe even a global trend. I would have met lots of new friends – who would have also made lots of new friends themselves -, created a website debating the current state of pizza, and end up with the feeling of having become part of something.

And, of course, with the most amazing pizza recipe ever.

Read “public space” where I wrote “pizza” and you have the process for redesigning Stortorget Square. This is network design.

The outcome, the new square, will not be the work of one architect (traditional style), neither the result of a conventional collavorative process, a little Frankesntein from an exhausting consensual process. It would be the realization of what the people of Hamar have dreamt for Stortorget Square. Something new you can relate to.

So, come meet us. Join the dreamhamar network!

Since last Thursday part of Ecosistema Urbano (@ecosistema) is in Hamar for the dreamhamar project.

Belinda Tato and Noa Peer (@belindatato, @dolceoblio) are in Hamar making contacts within Hamar’s social fabric and trying to get as many people involved as possible. Today they will share with us dreamhamar‘s progress on Hamar Experience, at 18:00 (Madrid, Norway time).

There will be five FREE workshops for the Hedmark County residents to participate on. By means of these workshops their ideas will become part of the network design process of dreamhamar.

For those who do not live in Hedmark, the online workshops are the best way to participate in dreamhamar. Registration is open until September 26th.

Until 18:00 o’clock today, we leave you with The Done Manifesto, as originally published by Bre Pettis on http://www.brepettis.com . It is a work methodology useful for elephant projects and situations that require a very resolutive approach.

The Cult of Done Manifesto

There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.

Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.

There is no editing stage.

Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.

Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.

The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.

Once you’re done you can throw it away.

Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.

People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.

Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.

Destruction is a variant of done.

If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.

Done is the engine of more.

Domenico Di Siena (Ecosistema Urbano)

4Gentleman / Tiananmen SquARed, Tank Man in situ. Source

The Department of Architecture at Bezalel is seeking to promote an updated and high-quality discourse on architectural thinking and practice. For that end, as part of its series of events and programs, it is planning a central event that will take place at the end of the academic year. During that event, the department will invite leading architects and designers from around the world to discuss their work through a shared theme with both the students and the wider public. The guests are planned to stay for several days in Israel and will take part, as critics, in final student reviews at the department.

This central event, scheduled for the end of June, will provide an opportunity not only to expose the public to the oeuvre of some of the world’s leading practitioners in their professional prime, but also to question and define the boundaries and characteristics of architectural culture in Israel vis-א-vis other geographies.

Format

The programme is built as a two-day event, in which the first day (June 23) is dedicated to reviews at the department in Jerusalem and the second day (June 24) in the morning hours, will be organized around a public panel in which participants will discuss their works in relation to this year’s theme, “realism”.

List of participants
