Lara Freire – architecture and cinema

CATEGORY: ⚐ EN + architecture + eu:abierto

My name is Lara Freire. My interest in cinema started as a kid; at the age of 6, my mother, a big film lover who spent her days taping movies on beta tapes, took me to acting lessons and that woke up the monster inside me.
I started in front of the cameras and as time went by I began to feel more and more attracted to the people who were running backwards and forwards, behind, in the dark…

… after trying out the Philosophy faculty and running around for some time, I came across the Cinematography School of Madrid (Escuela de Cinematografía de la Comunidad de Madrid, E.C.A.M), where I read a degree in Performing Arts.
Throughout those school years I took part in the projects that were organised outside classes and I did some work on stage scenery.
When I finished I was very clear I wanted to be behind.

For five years I worked as a director of shorts, feature films and video clips. I taught myself about this field… I was very lucky to have the chance to ask some masters like Juán Mariné, Luis Berdejo, Pablo Rosso and Emilio Ruiz (Oscar 2007 for the Pan’s Labyrinth), and others, and who had the care to teach me.
Thanks to them, their energy, the empiricism instilled in me as a child in the British school of Madrid, my insatiable curiosity and the confidence other people put on me when offering me the chance to be part of a team and try new ways of making the worlds we imagined visible, I learnt the profession.

Afterwards, cinema went through a lean period and I had lots of spare time…
I decided to use this time to work on some shortages in my training that were stopping me from moving forwards; here I chose the tools offered in Architecture. I feel very lucky for having entered this field with a previous cinematographic training and other points of view on elements in common in the process, the scale, the time, the space, the route, the rhythm, the light, the directions, the looks, the tone, the sensations….; an idea inside someone’s head and a team that makes this abstract universe visible…
What started as a complement to cinema is today a great field full of opportunities for interacting with society in a direct and ordinary way. For me architecture is a tool for change that greatly amplifies the field of opportunities when combined with other disciplines.

I am in fourth grade at the Escuela Politécnica San Pablo Ceu in Madrid and I take part in urban interventions and team works:http://bicimad07.blogspot.com

I attended the workshop at Dubrovnik thanks to the Ecosistema Urbano blog and there I met Belinda Tato, José Luis Vallejo, Izaskun Chinchilla and Roman Silje… all of them opened my mind in the way to tackle projects, processes, tools and management of all kinds of resources.
