Authorship and collaboration | Urban Design Conference at Harvard

Category: english+events

Next Saturday —February 4, 2012— José Luis Vallejo and Edgar Pieterse will be giving a lecture about “Authorship and collaboration” as part of the Urban Design Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

UD conference

The conference, subtitled Conditions and projections, hopes to propel a discussion about the unfulfilled potential of the practice of Urban Design and the role it can play in mediating the different disciplines and forces that eventually mould the built environment in our cities, suburbs and peri-urban conditions —the larger landscape that comprises the objects of human interventions of various kinds.

Participants in the conference will address 6 specific aspects relevant to contemporary discourse in Urban Design:

  • Land/form or the re-consideration of architecture’s traditional relationship to the ground, city and landscape, no longer occupying a site but instead, constructing and transforming the site itself.
  • Micro-Urbanisms or how in the context of crisis and uncertainty, local, networked, and even intangible interventions can have a direct impact on urban life.
  • Applied Research or the instrumental use of teaching and academia’s theories, methods and techniques for the purpose of real transformation of the urban realm.
  • Regulatory Practices that actively engage design through planning and policy making to propose more comprehensive scenarios to the current physical transformations of the built environment.
  • Strategic Upgrading, or the idea of large-scale transformation precipitated by strategic changes in the urban microcosm.
  • Authorship and Collaboration, or the exploration of current thinking about the role of collective authorship and collaboration within the design process in response to diverse working scales, emerging technologies and degrees of complexity

You can learn more about the conference at the official website.

Hamar Experience 12 | Cultural Rucksack and art in public space

Category: dreamhamar+english+events

This evening the energy of the young and the inspiration of the muses make a somewhat different Hamar Experience, but don’t be afraid, for it is what happens when you have so many things to talk about with such nice guests.

Kathrine Berg is a lovely woman and artist who is working with the 1,300 kids from the Cultural Rucksack Project. By the way, the Cultural Rucksack will finish this week and we are looking forward to seeing the results.

Inger Lise works on a different project about art and youth. Whatever she has to say, it is going to be interesting. And yes, we are letting her tell you the details about the project. We think it’s more interesting that way.

And there is more, because next week ACTIVITIES workshops begin and you are going to get a preview on what is going to happen there – What? You haven’t registered yet? It is free, it is fun and you’ll meet interesting people while talking about Hamar. And we might just invite you to coffee and cake, too.

There will also be a surprise for the technology oriented, so don’t forget your smart phone or your tablet pc.

Let the muses and the younsters inspire you this evening at 18:00h on Hamar Experience 12.

Hamar Experience 11 | Technology workshop

Category: dreamhamar+english+events

Last week the TECHNOLOGY workshop took place and Hamar response was even better than expected. We also had a workshop with students from Bergen School of Architecture, who resulted in a free lunch on Stortorget – with a cow as special guest!

On today’s Hamar Experience 11 Belinda Tato will share pictures and anecdotes from the workshop and the free lunch.

And of course, because Hamar is the star of dreamhamar, Belinda will share the spotlight with a citizen who participated on TECHNOLOGY workshop – Morten Fridstrøm. He will tell us about his experience and if the workshop was everything he expected!

Unfortunately, we will not be able to bring the cow to Hamar Experience. Nevertheless, you’ve got a date with the progress of dreamhamar on Monday, at 18:00h on http://www.dreamhamar.org/category/hamar-experience/

See you this evening!

Ecosistema urbano in Israel

Category: ecosistema urbano+english+events

The Department of Architecture at Bezalel is seeking to promote an updated and high-quality discourse on architectural thinking and practice. For that end, as part of its series of events and programs, it is planning a central event that will take place at the end of the academic year. During that event, the department will invite leading architects and designers from around the world to discuss their work through a shared theme with both the students and the wider public. The guests are planned to stay for several days in Israel and will take part, as critics, in final student reviews at the department.

This central event, scheduled for the end of June, will provide an opportunity not only to expose the public to the oeuvre of some of the world’s leading practitioners in their professional prime, but also to question and define the boundaries and characteristics of architectural culture in Israel vis-א-vis other geographies.

Format

The programme is built as a two-day event, in which the first day (June 23) is dedicated to reviews at the department in Jerusalem and the second day (June 24) in the morning hours, will be organized around a public panel in which participants will discuss their works in relation to this year’s theme, “realism”.

The theme for Oslo’s Architecture Triennale 2010 is architectural policy. MAN MADE TOMORROW will discuss alternatives for the sustainable city. Key themes are climate, urban development, densification and mobility.

The World Urban Youth Forum changes name to the World Urban Youth Assembly

Category: english+events

The World Urban Youth Forum is undergoing a transformation, and it will now be called the World Urban Youth Assembly. This change is expected to help the youth to be better placed to meet the needs of an ever changing urban world.

This development follows the successful World Urban Youth Forums held in Vancouver Canada in 2006 and in Nanjing, China in 2008, where the forum bagged a number of achievements, including the adoption by the UN-HABITAT Governing Council of decisions important to the youth, such as resolution 21/6 which facilitated the establishment of a special fund for Urban Youth-Led Development and resolution 22/4, which provided for the Youth Forum to be an integral part of the World Urban Forum.

Les Rencontres de la Lumière – December 8th, Lyon

Category: ecosistema urbano+english+events

lyon

Every year, the Festival of Lights welcomes the “Rencontres de la Lumière” organised in collaboration with the LUCI Association (Lighting Urban Community International). These meetings provide a forum for discussions on the theme of urban lighting and the associated social and environmental issues. The 2009 edition will focus on light planning developments in various countries over the past 20 years and will question the social and economic sustainability of urban lighting.

9.00 a.m – 12.45 p.m.: From public image to public space: developments in lighting masterplans over the past 20 years

Since the 1980s, urban lighting and masterplanning have been the focus of attention    for urban communities.    Urban lighting has changed significantly, from an aesthetic vision to a vision more linked to city rythms, the habits of inhabitants, public space and social issues. The City of Lyon’s celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Lyon’s lighting masterplan is a fitting occasion to reflect on    its positive and negative aspects and to compare it to the masterplans of other cities in Europe and beyond, taking into consideration different cultural contexts and methodologies.

Speakers:
- Antoine Bouchet, Public Lighting Department, City of Lyon, and Michel Bouit, former Director of Public Lighting, City of Lyon
- France- Rong Haolei, Beijing Institute of Urban Planning and Design – China
- Jens Jacob Bierring, Architect, Urban Design Department, City of Copenhagen – Denmark
- Margherita Suss, GMS Studio associato, Milan – Italy

Moderator: Alexandre Colombani, Director of LUCI Association

2.30 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.: Social and economic sustainability of lighting

For several years, technical and economic aspects of sustainability have greatly influenced lighting practices and    policies, while environmental, social and cultural    factors were generally dealt with in the context of thematic approaches.    Taking these    factors    into account in this way does not offer a sufficiently global approach and many issues are left unexplored. The ‘Rencontres de la Lumière’ do not claim to exhaustively examine sustainability issues but will, through the presentation of diverse case studies, demonstrate the value of taking the environmental, social and cultural dimensions of lighting into consideration.

Speakers:
- Horacio Valencia, Urban Lighting Architect, City of Medellin – Colombia
- Tim Edensor and Steve Millington, Senior Lecturers in Human Geography, University of Manchester – England
- Michael Moradiellos [ecosistema urbano], and Juan José Garcia, Light Engineer, Madrid – Spain
- Chanyaporn Chuntamara, Professor at the School of Architecture and Design, Thonburi, Bangkok – Thailand

Moderator: Jean-Michel Deleuil, Lecturer HDR, EDU-EVS, INSA of Lyon – France

[ecosistema urbano] has been invited to the Biennale. We are participating with two installations entitled “TEN THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED FROM THE CITY”.

The first one is at the Italian Pavilion, it consists of a mural in which we show these 10 principles associated to different projects and actions of [ecosistema urbano]. We have used anaglyph techniques to allow the public to expirience the installation in different ways.

The second one is an audio installation. In it we mix sounds from the city with our own voices, discusing these ten concepts. It makes part of the Novissimo events.

Megastructure Reloaded

Archigram’s Plug-in City, Constant Nieuwenhuys’ New Babylon and Yona Friedman’s La Ville spatiale rank among the incunabula of the 1960s. Combining visionary architecture, pop culture, art, and situationist rebellion, they became known far beyond the narrow confines of urban planning. Till now, however, there has been no exhibition dealing explicitly with megastructuralists’ vision.

Workshops on deprived housing areas in Denmark

Category: architecture+ecosistema urbano+english+events

The objective of the workshop is to analyze the physical challenges and problems of the housing area. Though the problems of the area consist of social, economic and physical aspects, this workshop will only focus on the physical aspects.

The intention of the workshop is not to develop solutions but to define the key problems regarding the physical environment: architecture, outdoor spaces and urban planning.
