The World Urban Youth Forum is undergoing a transformation, and it will now be called the World Urban Youth Assembly. This change is expected to help the youth to be better placed to meet the needs of an ever changing urban world.
This development follows the successful World Urban Youth Forums held in Vancouver Canada in 2006 and in Nanjing, China in 2008, where the forum bagged a number of achievements, including the adoption by the UN-HABITAT Governing Council of decisions important to the youth, such as resolution 21/6 which facilitated the establishment of a special fund for Urban Youth-Led Development and resolution 22/4, which provided for the Youth Forum to be an integral part of the World Urban Forum.
Every year, the Festival of Lights welcomes the “Rencontres de la Lumière” organised in collaboration with the LUCI Association (Lighting Urban Community International). These meetings provide a forum for discussions on the theme of urban lighting and the associated social and environmental issues. The 2009 edition will focus on light planning developments in various countries over the past 20 years and will question the social and economic sustainability of urban lighting.
9.00 a.m – 12.45 p.m.: From public image to public space: developments in lighting masterplans over the past 20 years
Since the 1980s, urban lighting and masterplanning have been the focus of attention for urban communities. Urban lighting has changed significantly, from an aesthetic vision to a vision more linked to city rythms, the habits of inhabitants, public space and social issues. The City of Lyon’s celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Lyon’s lighting masterplan is a fitting occasion to reflect on its positive and negative aspects and to compare it to the masterplans of other cities in Europe and beyond, taking into consideration different cultural contexts and methodologies.
Speakers:
- Antoine Bouchet, Public Lighting Department, City of Lyon, and Michel Bouit, former Director of Public Lighting, City of Lyon
- France- Rong Haolei, Beijing Institute of Urban Planning and Design – China
- Jens Jacob Bierring, Architect, Urban Design Department, City of Copenhagen – Denmark
- Margherita Suss, GMS Studio associato, Milan – Italy
Moderator: Alexandre Colombani, Director of LUCI Association
2.30 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.: Social and economic sustainability of lighting
For several years, technical and economic aspects of sustainability have greatly influenced lighting practices and policies, while environmental, social and cultural factors were generally dealt with in the context of thematic approaches. Taking these factors into account in this way does not offer a sufficiently global approach and many issues are left unexplored. The ‘Rencontres de la Lumière’ do not claim to exhaustively examine sustainability issues but will, through the presentation of diverse case studies, demonstrate the value of taking the environmental, social and cultural dimensions of lighting into consideration.
Speakers:
- Horacio Valencia, Urban Lighting Architect, City of Medellin – Colombia
- Tim Edensor and Steve Millington, Senior Lecturers in Human Geography, University of Manchester – England
- Michael Moradiellos [ecosistema urbano], and Juan José Garcia, Light Engineer, Madrid – Spain
- Chanyaporn Chuntamara, Professor at the School of Architecture and Design, Thonburi, Bangkok – Thailand
Moderator: Jean-Michel Deleuil, Lecturer HDR, EDU-EVS, INSA of Lyon – France

Enormous and reasoned assembling of umbrellas, wood, cables and nets. Composite structure supporting the machine, the installation, the shelter. Compartment that can be reconfigured and can host a user/person. Without any fixation, structurally autonomous, therefore able to move in the space of the yard according to the visitors’/users’ (inside or outside the compartment) desires and interactions. From the inside, the user can make the composition of the surface vary, defining its degree of opacity and privacy.
[ecosistema urbano] has been invited to the Biennale. We are participating with two installations entitled “TEN THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED FROM THE CITY”.
The first one is at the Italian Pavilion, it consists of a mural in which we show these 10 principles associated to different projects and actions of [ecosistema urbano]. We have used anaglyph techniques to allow the public to expirience the installation in different ways.
The second one is an audio installation. In it we mix sounds from the city with our own voices, discusing these ten concepts. It makes part of the Novissimo events.
Archigram’s Plug-in City, Constant Nieuwenhuys’ New Babylon and Yona Friedman’s La Ville spatiale rank among the incunabula of the 1960s. Combining visionary architecture, pop culture, art, and situationist rebellion, they became known far beyond the narrow confines of urban planning. Till now, however, there has been no exhibition dealing explicitly with megastructuralists’ vision.

Think to a Plaid in the middle of a field, a sunny day and some musical Nerds with their laptops that generate sweet electronic melodies: not a sound from a generator, no stinky fuel but only the sound of the music and the smell of just cut grass.
Play on Plaid is also the occasion to record tracks produced with solar energy and make out of them records with out being totally slaves of oil.
The objective of the workshop is to analyze the physical challenges and problems of the housing area. Though the problems of the area consist of social, economic and physical aspects, this workshop will only focus on the physical aspects.

We have talked about basurama before. I, Ben, as well as being part of Ecosistema Urbano for nearly a year now, I spend, since 2001, much of my time and energy in organising basurama. In this occasion, we want to talk about the next workshop we are organising: Diseño de sobra 07.
A workshop for the design and creation of objects in real time. An initiative for researching the possibilities of working with industrial waste in the creation process. A collaboration with El Ultimo Grito (a design firm currently based in Berlin, run by Rosario Hurtado and Roberto Feo, lecturers of Goldsmith University and Royal College of Art in London). A collective experience in a unique setting in Madrid (Palacio de la Prensa, Callao). In continuance of Diseño de Sobra 06.
The workshop will be 3 days long (8-10 january), we will work morning and afternoon to develop together the ideas, design and production of movable devices capable of radically transforming urban conditions of those places where they are temporarily installed. No-identifiable bodies for interacting freely in an urban context.
If you are interested, send an email with your details (full name and telephone number) to inscripciones at basurama.org telling us why you can to take part in DdeS07, together with a representative image of your work. The workshop is free. There are 10 places available. Application deadline: 31st december. The list of selected candidates will be published on the 2nd january.
