Building Futures is the future studies programme of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Its activities include undertaking research, producing publications, and holding lectures, debates and seminar events. Building Futures promotes and encourages interaction between researchers, developers, architects, clients and the public.
Building Futures was established to create space for discussion about the needs of society from our built environment and, consequently, the built environment professions in 20 years and beyond.
The group aims to address the big picture. How and where will we be living in 50 or 100 years’ time, when the climate has changed and cities are bigger than ever? What technologies will architects be using to design buildings and what new materials will they be specifying? How will the inevitable new technologies affect the buildings we all use every day?

A few weeks ago, the British Institute of Structural Engineers published the winners of their international Structural Awards 07. I like some of the winning projects better than others, but there is a little bit of everything among them – slender bridges, complex geometry roofs, intelligent systems for earthquake-resistant structures, even buildings made of lime hemp blocks… but do you know what I could hardly find? Concrete… in return, the term “sustainable” appears in various occasions.
British engineers have surprised me, getting closer to the issue of sustainability, recognising the efforts of professionals who choose their materials to minimise environmental impact; professionals who bear in mind the life cycle of their structures, not only how much money the contractor can save today on a job, the future of which they don’t care about….
Steel prevails in the winning projects. I do know this is the British construction tradition, but I like to think that it is so for many reasons, some of which are positive. If it can favour future rehabilitation, dismantling or recycling of the structures, so much the better.
Despite the British society having apparently taken advantage of general concern about sustainability with their business around “carbon footprints”, I am pleased to see this effort for promoting concern about the environment among yet another group; in this case, structural engineers.

The next World Sustainable Building Conference SB08 will take place in Melbourne in September 2008.
It sounds like this event will stress the importance of industry and economy as tools for promoting a better built environment: “SB08 has a multifaceted program that builds strong and effective linkages across stakeholder groups to advance sustainability knowledge and practice through market and industry transformation”
Reading about the themes of the conference we find: “There is growing recognition of the importance of whole-of-life thinking (time dimension) in the performance of built assets at all levels – from individual products to buildings to urban infrastructure systems (space dimension) (…) Stakeholders should contribute to improved overall quality of life while minimizing adverse impacts to our Natural Capital. Sustained liveability for future generations is our challenge.”

Recientemente, el Institute of Structural Engineers británico ha concedido sus premios internacionales Structural Awards 07. Algunos de los proyectos ganadores me gustan más que otros. Hay de todo – puentes esbeltos, cubiertas de geometrías complejas, sistemas muy inteligentes para estructuras sismo-resistentes e incluso edificios de bloques de algún tipo de adobe… pero sabéis lo que casi no hay? hormigón. ni siquiera en los puentes…. a cambio, la palabra “sostenible” aparece repetidas veces.
los ingenieros ingleses me han sorprendido, acercándose un poco más a la problemática de la sostenibilidad. reconocen los esfuerzos de unos profesionales que eligen sus materiales para que los impactos medioambientales se minimicen. profesionales que tienen en cuenta el ciclo de vida de sus estructuras, y no sólo cuánto dinero se puede ahorrar hoy la constructora en la ejecución de una obra de la que no les importa su futuro….
entre los proyectos premiados prevalece el acero – y ya sé que ésta es la tradición constructiva en el Reino Unido, pero me gusta pensar que es así por muchos motivos, algunos positivos. si puede favorecer una futura intervención o un futuro desmontaje y reciclaje de la estructura, mejor que mejor.
aunque la sociedad británica haya conseguido aprovecharse de la sostenibilidad a base de mediatizar la preocupación por el “carbon footprint”, yo me alegro de ver este esfuerzo por promover la preocupación por el medio ambiente entre otro colectivo más, en este caso, los ingenieros de estructuras.

i am very interested in construction technologies applied in humanitarian architecture and I want to use the blog for, on the one hand, telling you about some of the technologies currently being developed and, on the other hand, finding out what else is being done out there (send me an email – alejandra@ecosistemaurbano.com)
i want to start by presenting my friends’ project, CONCRETE CANVAS. these young British engineers have developed CONCRETE CLOTH, a concrete-based construction material. CC consists of a 3-dimensional fibre matrix containing a specially formulated dry concrete mix. a PVC backing on one surface of the cloth ensures the material is completely waterproof; while hydrophilic fibres on the opposite surface aid hydration by drawing the water into the cement. you shape the cloth, add water…. and it’s ready! the concrete hardens leaving a set structure.
this cloth has many useful applications (water tanks, flat roofs, building cladding…) but the idea originated from the construction of dome-shaped emergency shelters.
CONCRETE CANVAS SHELTERS can be deployed by 2 people without any training in under 40 mins and are ready to use in 12 hours – only water and air are needed. the shelters are distributed in a packed format, water is added, they self-inflate to adopt the optimum final shape and in a few hours the concrete sets. they are easily distributed, they are semi-permanent, can be covered with other materials or can be part buried to improve the thermal properties and make them more resistant against impact… they meet certain needs (especially where there is an armed conflict going on or in extreme climates) that a more traditional tent (despite them being great for other needs!) can’t meet.

estoy muy interesada en la tecnología constructiva aplicada a la arquitectura de cooperación y quiero aprovechar el blog para, por un lado, dar a conocer algunos sistemas que se están desarrollando por “ahí” y, por otro, enterarme de más cosas que estén pasando en este campo (escribidme un email a alejandra@ecosistemaurbano.com).
voy a empezar presentando CONCRETE CANVAS, el proyecto de unos buenos amigos. estos jóvenes ingleses han desarrollado CONCRETE CLOTH (tela de hormigón), un material de construcción en base hormigón. se trata de una matriz tridimensional de fibras que contiene una mezcla seca de hormigón, sobre una lámina de PVC que lo impermeabiliza en una de las caras. Se coloca en la forma que ser quiere, se añade agua…. y ya está! el hormigón endurece y la estructura está hecha.
con esta “tela” se pueden conseguir muchas cosas útiles (depósitos de agua, cubiertas planas, paneles de acabado para fachadas…), pero la idea nació pensando en construcciones abovedadas para refugios de emergencia.
los refugios de emergencia de CONCRETE CANVAS se pueden montar entre dos personas en 40 min y en 12 horas están listos para su uso – sólo hace falta agua y aire. Los refugios se distribuyen como un saco seco, se les añade agua, se hinchan solos para adoptar su forma final óptima, y en pocas horas endurecen. son refugios fáciles de distribuir, son semi permanentes, admiten ser recubiertos o semienterrados para mejorar sus propiedades térmicas y conseguir una mayor resistencia frente al impacto de proyectiles, son duraderas… consiguen cubrir una serie de necesidades (zonas de conflicto armado o de condiciones climatológicas extremas) que las tiendas de campaña tradicionales, si bien son una solución muy buena para otros casos, no cubren.

For those reading our blog from the UK, we propose a lecture about construction and sustainability taking place in London this Thursday 18th October.
Future Perfect – an engineering agenda for a sustainable society? is this year’s joint ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) annual lecture.
Mark Whitby, co-funder of the multi-disciplinar engineering firm Whitbybird based in London, will talk about sustainability, climate change and their impact on the design and construction of buildings and infrastructure.
Cruzamos el Canal de la Mancha para proponeros una conferencia sobre edificación y sostenibilidad en Londres, este jueves 18.
El RIBA (Real Instituto de Arquitectos Británicos) y el ICE (Instituto de Ingenieros Civiles británico) organizan conjuntamente una conferencia anual sobre temas de interés para ambas disciplinas. Este año nos presentan Future Perfect – an engineering agenda for sustainable society? en la que Mark Whitby, co-fundador de la ingeniería multidisciplinar Whitbybird, hablará sobre el impacto que la preocupación por el cambio climático y la sostenibilidad ha de tener en el diseño y construcción de edificios e infraestructura.

This week Madrid celebrates its Architecture Week. If you are in the city, have a look – there are talks, visits to outstanding buildings and conferences going on every day.
